The Resource Centre – Jekteviksbakken 31

Recently a lot of changes have taken place at the Resource Centre. The event room has been moved next door, leaving us with a foyer/common area that will be used for both formal- and informal meetings. We encourage you to make use of it, and to enjoy a cup of coffee with one of our books, newspapers or magazines. This letter is to update you on the recent changes, and to invite suggestions for further improvements of the common area.

Today the common area exhibits parts of the library collection that UiB and CMI moved to this library in 2009. In addition, we will order new books on demand, including books and articles written by UiB/CMI researchers on themes related to global challenges. The largest part of the library collection is still located on the first floor – easily searchable and accessible. The computer, with access to all UiB electronic resources, is also located here at the Resource Centre. Additionally, two electronic screens help display events, activities etc.

To give room for books, but also to create a suitable atmosphere, we have installed a beautiful new shelf covering one of the walls in the common area. We plan to fill the shelf with books, posters, pictures, exhibitions and more. We welcome your input and suggestions on what to display here. On the top two rows we exhibit books with nice covers together with old travel books. We also temporarily exhibit new books on the Sudan and Afghanistan, the latest publications on corruption, and the most recent books published by researchers from CMI and UiB on our common thematic areas. Most of the books exhibited are on loan. Please contact the library if you would like to borrow one of the books, or to return a borrowed book. We will label the different book collections, making it easier to get an overview of the content.

This week we are displaying the latest books by Sarah Tobin (CMI) next to the posters promoting her Wednesday 19 September event at the Resource Centre. We look forward to this Book Launch and hope to see many of you there.

Would you like to promote your new book at the Resource Centre? Is there a special book collection on a country or a thematic area that you think that would be of special interest to move up from the first floor and make it visually in the new shelf?

Do you have a research project or a program including pictures, posters or film/documentary that could would be useful to display in the common area? We hope that both UiB and CMI researchers will make use of this opportunity.

We plan to add new printed newspapers and magazines. Today you will find Morgenbladet, New York Review of Books and Bistandsaktuelt. We plan to add Dag og tid, The Economist, India Today, New African and The Guardian Weekly, and welcome further suggestions from you.

We invite you to make use of this area, and to communicate your inputs and comments on how to make this an interesting, stimulating and useful area.

Best wishes,
Reidunn Ljones,
Senior Librarian,
